Help now available online for problem gamblers

SINGAPORE - Problem gamblers who are too shy to seek help will soon have an alternative. The National Addictions Management Service (Nams) is creating an online manual to help them manage their condition on their own and in the privacy of their homes.

While there have been various campaigns on gambling addiction over the past two years, experts told MediaCorp that only about seven to 12 per cent of addicts seek professional help. This even as Nams, which treats more severe cases of problem gambling, has seen a steady increase of patients. Gambling addicts now account for 22 per cent of new patients, up from nine per cent in 2007.
