Woman mayor who stole £40,000 from social club to fund online gambling addiction is jailed

A former mayor who stole almost £40,000 to pay her online gambling debts was today jailed.Jayne Yeomans' habit became an addiction when she was 'at a low ebb'

Soon the 49-year-old, who served as Carlisle mayor for a year in the 1990s, was so hooked she forged her husband's signature to raise a mortgage on the family home.

And when she was discovered she tried to kill herself, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

The defendant, jailed for 12 months for theft of £38,726 and falsifying a mortgage document, stole the cash from Carlisle South End Constitutional Club.
